Rheinmetall Land 400 Phase 2 project win a boost for SEQ, jobs, industry and Australian steel

The Australia Steel Institute (ASI) congratulates Rheinmetall on its award of the Land 400 Phase 2 contract and recognises its commitment to working with local industry, using thousands of tonnes of Australian steel.

The project, worth up to $5 billion, will see Rheinmetall deliver 225 combat reconnaissance vehicles to the Australia Army.

Rheinmetall’s manufacturing hub, the Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence (MILVEHCOE) in Brisbane, will provide important industrial capability for the continuous design, manufacture, export and support for military vehicles, turrets and tactical systems.

As a centre of excellence, the MILVEHCOE will be the focal point for the 225 Land 400 combat vehicles, LAND 121 logistics vehicles and other complex defence projects. Under the LAND 121 Phase 3B program, Rheinmetall is delivering more than 2,500 logistics trucks to the Australian Army.

Tony Dixon, Chief Executive, Australian Steel Institute said, “Rheinmetall’s collaborative approach and early engagement with Bisalloy and Bluescope has delivered a great result for SEQ, local jobs, industry and Australian steel.

The MILVEHCOE is an important investment in Australian capability; the Australian steel industry stands ready to supply the facility and the specialised steel used in these vehicles.

The potential export opportunities are an exciting development for Australian Steel.”
