The nation’s best in steel shine

Renewing the iconic ‘money box building’ in Sydney, Australia’s first conventionally erected multi-storey apartment building using light gauge steel, a Commonwealth Games-ready indoor sports centre and an equine facility that showcases steel cladding topped the ASI’s latest Steel Excellence Awards program.

Held every two years, the awards this year attracted almost 100 entries overall in the initial State rounds with the winners being shortlisted for consideration for the national award in the category they entered. The winning project teams were announced at the Gala Dinner of the latest Australian Steel Convention held at Grand Hyatt in Melbourne on 12 September.

The transformation of a 1916 building at 5 Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD into a 20-level premium grade office building, overcame heritage constraints to win Buildings – Large Projects. The traditional bank building was the model for the Commonwealth Bank’s metal money box for many years.

Australia's first conventionally erected multi-storey apartment building using light gauge steel (LGS) won in the Buildings - Small Projects category. Originally designed in concrete, then converted to timber and finally to LGS, the design team for Number 9 Apartments capitalised on the ability to mirror unit designs in detailing software to save significant time and improve accuracy.

Topping the Engineering Projects category is Queensland State Velodrome which takes advantage of various external cladding systems to meet required performance characteristics and support architecturally critical eaves detail that visually defines the building form and accentuates the meeting of raking walls and roof.

And for Steel Clad Structures, the Crackenback Stables complex in the Snowy Mountains attracted the top accolade in this category. Beautifully clad in corrugated galvanized steel, it featured weathering steel panelling at each end, holding yards and breezeway spaces.
