In 2002, the steel industry’s peak industry bodies the Australian Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the Steel Institute of Australia (SIA) merged to form the Australian Steel Institute (ASI).
AISC had engineers and fabricators as the main members; SIA the upstream Australian steel distributors and steel mills.
The merger followed an earlier decision by the two bodies to work together to combat the threat of imported steel and changes in the industry.
Don McDonald, who was chief executive of the AISC prior to the merger, was the inaugural chief executive of ASI. He continued in the position until his retirement in 2015. Arrium/OneSteel general manager Tony Dixon then took on the role, serving until 2019 when he retired due to ill health.
ASI NSW state manager Phil Casey acted as interim chief executive for six months in 2019 until the appointment of the current chief executive, former BlueScope manager and executive director of the Metal Roofing and Cladding Association Mark Cain in August 2019.
