Environmental Sustainability of Steel in the Building Construction Industry workshop

Windsor ballroom, 2pm-4pm, (in-person and live streamed)

Presentation by international sustainability expert Associate Professor Helena Gervasio from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Workshop will explore: 

  • Recycling and reuse of steel
  • Assessing sustainability, including green certificates and labelling schemes that recognise environmentally responsible practices. 
  • Life cycle analysis (LCA) and environmental product declarations (EPDs) for evaluating the environmental impacts of building and construction



Fabricators' forum

King George room, 2pm - 3.30pm. This forum is for fabricators only.

  • Imported fabricated steelwork. What are the current impacts? Fabricator survey results
  • How is AS/NZS 5131 certification being avoided when it is specified in contracts?
  • Suggestions for ASI training modules/courses
  • Attracting skilled labour
  • Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA). Changes recently implemented.

  • Senior engineer at the cyclone testing station at James Cook University Simon Ingham will present on testing and performance of cold formed steel building production.
  • Industry engagement manager at QLD Build Skills Australia Adam Pringle will provide an overview of Build Skills Australia, which is working with industry to find solutions to workforce challenges facing the construction, property and water industries.
  • President of the Metal Roofing Industry Association of Queensland Carl Brandon on a to-be determined subject.
