Fabricators forum attracts record crowd

Members have embraced an ASI-organised forum that allowed ASI’s SA fabricator members to talk directly to the SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Minister for Energy and Mining Tom Koutsantonis about issues impacting the industry, including cheap imported fabricated steel into privately owned industrial projects and local content for government-funded infrastructure projects.

Other issues raised included contractual risks imposed on local steel fabricators on government-funded infrastructure projects. Under the SA Industry Participation Policy (SAIPP), the local steel industry is encouraged to actively engage with the SA Office of the Industry Advocate which may help resolve such issues.

Opportunities were also highlighted for local businesses in South Australia, with billions of dollars of infrastructure projects in place in SA for the next four years including Torrens to Darlington, Women’s and Children’s Hospital. More than 50 people attended the forum including fabricators, distributors and SA Government representatives.

The event was proudly sponsored by a local ASI associate member, Adelaide Trucks & Vans.

The forum coincides with ASI member Bowhill Engineering winning a major contract to fabricate a tunnel segment of the Torrens Darlington motorway project, a monumental win for the SA-based company. The project brings long-term opportunities with apprenticeships and traineeships, ensuring a highly skilled future workforce. CEO Jodie Hawkes said the project would empower regional communities, strengthen local industries, and leave a lasting legacy for South Australia.
