Neumann Steel shows the way on sustainability

Steel products supplier Neumann Steel is showing the way for other fabricators when it comes to reducing its environmental footprint.

Under an energy efficiency program introduced five years ago, the Gold Coast-headquartered national operation has cut its emissions by more than seven per cent; expanded its solar PV system, increased its on-site renewable energy production, and recycled more than 95% of its waste.

Guiding the company’s strategy is Filipe Santoni, an environment and sustainability specialist who joined Neumann Steel eight years ago. Filipe said the company’s green strategy is geared towards responsibly sourcing products for its operations and ensuring compliance with modern slavery regulations across the supply chain.

Ensuring environmental compliance in its various sites around Australia is a key focus. Towards this end, Neumann Steel has joined the ASI Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) scheme to ensure its operations adhere to the industry best practice.

The company now has three of its sites around Australia certified under the SSA scheme. Filipe said the key reason why Neumann joined the scheme was demands by an increasing number of customers who wanted to partner with companies that prioritise sustainable practices in their operations. “We are pleased that the steel industry now has a benchmark for meeting sustainability requirements,” Filipe said.
