Senate inquiry to decide on scrap exports

A Senate Inquiry will decide later this year whether to support an ASI submission seeking a prohibition on the export of unprocessed steel scrap.

In face-to-face representations, the ASI and industry representatives last month told the inquiry investigating committee Australia’s unprocessed steel scrap coming from locally used products should be processed in Australia. This would help address high local demand for scrap and reduce greenhouse emissions through recycling.

ASI senior sustainability adviser Michael Dawson has spent the past two years working with InfraBuild, Liberty GFG, BSL, National Waste Recycling Industry Council, Sims Metals Group, Sell and Parker and InfraBuild Recycling in support of the proposal.

Meetings are planned in coming months with relevant MPs and departments to lobby their support.
