Transport infrastructure remains key market for steel in 2025

Transport infrastructure will be a mainstay of project activity for many ASI members in the next 12 months, albeit at a slightly lower level than for previous years, according to the latest Infrastructure Australia’s (IA) Infrastructure Market Capacity Report.

Aggregate steel demand between 2024-2028 is expected to total 8.1 million tonnes. Construction material cost increases moderated in the past year, led by falls in steel pricing. Labour shortages across all the main employment categories are forecast to continue. ASI played an important role in contributing to this year’s report.

The national view on steel fabrication capacity and the damaging impact of cheap imports reported on page 35 of the IA report references data from an ASI member survey.
