Raised in a small town in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, Western Sydney University (WSU) student Ashish Tiwari has taken out an ASI Australian Steel undergraduate steel design award.
Ashish’s path to success has been a difficult one. After high school in Bhutan, he studied civil engineering in India before a refuge refugee crisis forced him to move in his second year to Nepal. For six years he dreamt of joining a university and completing his degree.
Australia provided that opportunity. Ashish applied to WSU to do a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering – and was accepted.
“I had my first child which made it quite challenging specially with having to study full time, work full time and be a full timer dad. But those challenges brought the best out of me and my time management skills,” Ashish said.
A graduate civil engineer with Sydney Water, Ashish is now hoping to join in a Master's Program or a PhD by the end of this year. He said the ASI award recognise the three R's – recognition, reassurance and reward - that every student needs in their academic life to prosper and work harder. “Thank you for recognizing my hard work.”
