Structural engineering draftspeople provide technical support to structural engineers. They assist in the design of structural projects such as buildings, bridges and towers by preparing the detailed plans and drawings to the engineer’s design and specifications.

Steel draftspeople can move into various roles, such as structural designers or project managers. They can also advance to senior designer and design manager positions, overseeing the creation of steel structures.


What does a steel draftsperson do?

Studies blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine job requirements

Creates electronic plans using 2D and 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD)

Helps prepare tenders and design documentation for projects

Carries out site inspections of completed works for design engineers

Plays a key role in creating all project documentation

Helps maintain standardisation of steelwork framing and connections

What qualifications do I need?

Getting into a diploma course requires the completion of Year 12, preferably with a maths subject under your belt. It is encouraged that you undertake a cadetship while you are working in the industry.
