Steel detailers specialise in preparing shop drawings for the manufacture and erection of the steel framework used in the construction of buildings, bridges and other structures. To do this, they use 2D and 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software. Steel detailers are also referred to as construction modellers.

Steel detailers can move into various roles, such as structural designers or project managers. They can also advance to senior designer and design manager positions, overseeing the creation of steel structures.
