Course Content
This course will explain the basics of corrosion prevention for a number of popular steel products and assist in the choice of the most effective solutions to minimize the risk of failure. It is a total of 2 hours and 30 minute (not including quizzes) course.
This course details of the latest developments to improve designer knowledge in the analysis and design processes of heavy crane runway girders and their supporting steel structures. Constructability and maintenance provisions will also be discussed with the aim of reducing risk and improving safety.
Section 1 – Recap of Design Requirements:
• Building deflection requirements – review of standards and why deflections are critical
• Considerations of building interaction with crane types and crane specifications – what designers
can do to lower the risk of damage
• Building distortions due to load effects – what to do during analysis
• Provisions for maintenance
Section 2 – Connection Details – a review of what does and does not work, the common areas of failure and why:
• Over constraint of runway girders for flexure
• Longitudinal and Horizontal load-path considerations and common eccentric load-path errors
• Elastic response of runway girders and diagonal brace arrangements
• Column base details for function and serviceability
Section 3 – How to best disseminate design intent and other lifecycle considerations to minimize risk for
designers, crane users and building occupants:
• Recommended practice for fabrication requirements
• Recommendations for erection and crane commissioning requirements
• Recommendations for long term crane supporting building use and maintenance requirements
Section 4 – Q&A – answering questions posted from sessions 1, 2 and 3
