Structural steel fabricators manufacture, assemble, modify and repair steel structures of all types such as steel-framed buildings and bridges. They cut, shape, join and finish steel using detailed specifications to fabricate the members, parts and sub-assemblies of the structure.
Once you are a trade qualified fabricator, there is a range of career paths available, including supervision and inspection. You might decide to open your own business, or move into a quality or compliance role.

Studies blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine job requirements
Selects, cleans and prepares metal stock
Cuts marked-out metal using hand tools, flame cutting torches and cutting machines
Shapes and bends metal using hand and machine, heating and hammering
Joins metal sections using various welding techniques, bolting and riveting
Finishes products by cleaning, polishing, filing and bathing in acidic solutions
There are no specified educational entry requirements although Year 10 or equivalent is preferred. Training can be started while still at school. After school, the training involves an apprenticeship.

A typical entry level position starts from $60,000 per year and with experience and expertise can increase up to $160,000*.
